How Numerology Works From Various Perspectives

How Numerology Works From Various Perspectives – In the world of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger’s favorite subject is arithmancy. The novels don’t offer a lot of detail, but they make it clear that arithmancy involves the magic of numbers. Hermione learned to use complex charts to predict numbers, or figure out the future using numbers.

In the real world, arithmancy is known as numerology. According to numerologists, everything in the world depends on the mystical nature of numbers. These properties come from the numbers’ built-in vibrations.

Other new age practitioners, however, used the term vibration to describe belief in the power of objects. Such as crystals, gemstones, colors and essential oils.

According to the theory, each number has a unique vibration. Thus, it gives / contains certain properties. This property can explain a person’s behavior. Or predict; are romantic partners compatible?

Numerological analysis, can determine lucky numbers. Or someone’s lucky day.

Numbers from date of birth, can offer clues. In particular, about how the world works on important events in people. According to many numerologists, nothing happens by chance. Everything happens because of numbers.

Most numerologists refer to Pythagoras. The figure who pioneered numerology.

Pythagoras was a philosopher who was born in Greece, circa 569 BC. Historians do not know much about Pythagoras, as little of his original work has survived. And most of the people who wrote about him did the same thing hundreds of years after his death.

In fact, some historians believe that the discoveries usually attributed to Pythagoras actually came from some of his followers. In addition, some historians have argued, that personality traits are ascribed to him. Like, that, he wouldn’t let his followers eat or even touch peanuts – is apocryphal.

Pythagoras and his followers, known as Pythagoras, studied mathematics, music and philosophy. Many textbooks refer to the Pythagorean school which purportedly made several important discoveries, including:

  • Pythagoras Theorem, which states that; in a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse, is the sum of the squares of the other two sides (a2 + b2 = c2)
  • The mathematical proportion in musical harmony, possibly discovered through the use of string instruments.
  • The first irrational number, or, square root of two.

Pythagorean Constant

In addition, Pythagoras and his followers believed in the mystical nature of numbers. According to Underwood Dudley, author of “Numerology: Or What Pythagoras Wrought”, the Pythagoreans, were drawn to the mysticism of numbers. After discovering very interesting facts about numbers.

If you add up a series of odd numbers starting with the number one, the result is always a square number.

Discoveries like these, led the Pythagoreans to the conclusion that “all are numbers.” According to one interpretation, this means that people can measure everything in the world, and describe it in terms of numbers and proportions.

This is a make sense idea, and it has had a profound effect on science and mathematics. But according to another interpretation, “all are numbers” means that, everything in the world is made of numbers. And it can be reduced to a numeric value.

Number Properties

In their study of mathematical concepts, Pythagoras sorted numbers into categories. Numbers like 1, 4 and 9 are squares. Due to the corresponding number of dots, it can be arranged in perfect squares. One, three, six and 10 are triangles – one, three, six or 10 points can be arranged into regular triangles. Two, six and 12 are rectangles, because the number of pins they fit forms a rectangle.

Along with describing numbers in terms of mathematics and geometry, Pythagoras also described them in terms of non-numerical properties.

These traits have more to do with intuition and mysticism, than to science or mathematics. For example, odd numbers are masculine, and there are even numbers that are feminine.

Number 1 is creative, because a few additions can make another number. Two represent duality and woman, while three are male. Since the numbers two and three, five represent marriage, and because they fall right in the middle of the numbers one through nine, it also represents justice.

Ten is a sacred number, especially since it is the sum of the first four digits. Holiness number 10 leads to a list of 10 basic opponents:

  • Limited and unlimited
  • Odd and even
  • One and many
  • Right and left
  • Masculine and feminine
  • Rest and motion
  • Straight and bent
  • Light and darkness
  • Good and bad

After Pythagoras’ death, interest in mathematical mysticism ebbed. It reappeared with Neo-Pythagoras around the first century A.D. Pythagorean non-mathematical theories eventually faded away. In the late 1800’s, Mrs. L. Dow Balliett has published several books on vibration, music, and color. Other authors may have published work before Balliett, but his book seems to incorporate Pythagorean principles and add to the concepts used in numerology today.

According to Balliett and modern numerologists, each number has a specific vibration. People, food, objects, and colors also vibrate. In order to live a productive and harmonious life, people must make sure their environment vibrates in harmony with their own vibrations. This concept appears frequently in other new age practices, some of which describe it as the influence of the motion of subatomic particles. However, there is little scientific research to identify or measure such vibrations or analyze their effects on human existence.

Some numerologists have also attributed these vibrations to spherical music, or the voice of Pythagoras, who believed that planets and the Sun were created while orbiting Earth. Pythagoras believed that the planets were embedded in a transparent physical plane and that the distance between them corresponded to a musical ratio. Science has debunked both ideas, as well as the idea that the sun orbits the Earth.

In contrast to Pythagoras, modern numerologists applied numbers to people, in addition to applying intangible concepts to numbers. According to most numerologists, the numbers one through nine, have unique properties. Which is a direct result of their innate vibrations.

Some of these traits come from the writings of Pythagoras, and others come from the way cultures around the world use the numerical approach.

Different numerologists apply different attributes to numbers, but these are some of the most popular.

Some systems also designate a number with a repeating number as the master number, which includes all the attributes of the other two numbers:

  • 11: 1 and 2
  • 22: 2 and 4
  • 33: 3 and 6
  • 44: 4 and 8

Numerology intends to describe the future, guide human behavior, predict the outcome of relationships, and moreover the value of divinity.

For example, if the number nine has a certain vibration, a person number nine has the same vibration. The person can choose what to eat, where to go and how to live, based on which choice has the vibration corresponding to nine.

Let’s see how numerologists determine a person’s number next.

NUMEROLOGY AND SYNESTESIA

Numerology applies non-numeric concepts to numbers. Likewise, synesthesia is a neurological condition in which a person associates one sense with the perception of an unrelated sense. For example, a person with synesthesia may associate colors with words or smells with musical notes.

Translating Names into Numbers

The process of translating words to numbers is at the heart of numerology. This practice has its roots in Greek, Latin and Hebrew gematria, or the practice of turning words into numbers for divination purposes. People have used gematria, to study and interpret the Torah, the Bible and other religious texts.

Most of the time, numerologists focus on people’s names, using simple tables to convert names to numbers.

Different numerological systems use different graphs, but easy ones starting with “a” equals 1, “b” equals 2 and so on.

Numerologists usually use the name that a person receives at birth. Some argue that, unborn babies choose their own name. And communicate it to their parents physically, make sure their name will match them and give them the correct number.

According to numerologists, the name a person receives at birth is more important than a nickname, the name taken on marriage, or the name changed.

To determine a person’s number, numerologists take the appropriate numbers from the table and add them together. If the result has two or more digits, the numerologist will add the numbers together, repeating the steps until it is one digit.

As an example:

The total for the name “Harry” is 34, “James” is 12, and “Potter” is 31, for a total of 77. In some systems, the number 77 may be the master number, but most will add the two digits together for a total of 14, and then add one and four for a total of 5.

Many numerological systems also use a person’s birth date to view numbers, which is known as birth, life or destiny numerology.

Harry’s birthday, July 31, 1980, became:

Some numerologists use charts or diagrams to check numbers and letters in relation to one another. These diagrams can resemble astrological charts and can add an extra layer of meaning to a numerological reading.

But regardless of whether a numerologist uses a simple or complex system to determine results, his analysis tends to resemble a horoscope.

Numerologists will interpret the results and connotations of each number to make recommendations or theorize about a person’s future. Recommendations often include:

  • Lucky day or lucky number
  • The optimal career path for one’s numerological temperament
  • Negative tendencies to be avoided
  • Positive attributes to emphasize
  • What to look for in a romantic partner

Like astrology, numerology is a type of applied mysticism – it associates mystical symbols with a person’s life. For this reason, some have credited numerology with helping them make personal or financial decisions. Including those related to business.

However, there is no evidence that the system works or that there is any real correlation between the numbers and their associated concepts.

But, let’s look at some of the other controversies surrounding numerology in the next section.

The technique used to determine a person’s number has also been used to associate people’s names with the number of beasts, or 666, which appear in the book of Revelation. Many people associate this number with the end of the world or the devil, although with enough adjustments it’s possible to get anyone’s name to 666.

Numerological Criticism

Some have noticed the repeated appearance of certain numbers in their daily lives, in historical records or in religious texts such as the Bible. Too often the repetition was too frequent by chance. In some cases, people have theorized that these repeated numbers have a special meaning or indicate divine influence or supernatural powers. While not strictly part of numerology, this perception often assigns attributes such as numerology to frequently occurring numbers. This has led to 23 Enigma and other beliefs that certain numbers are at the center of a pattern or conspiracy.

Critics, on the other hand, regard the incident as coincidence for a number of reasons:

  • People are good at recognizing patterns. While this helps people learn to read, count and recognize faces, it can also encourage people to interpret random events as patterns.
  • Due to the small number of people in the world, repetition is inevitable.
  • Due to the small number of whole, squared or different numbers in the world, the repetition of them is also inevitable.

This criticism can also be applied to the practice of numerology. For example, some practitioners say they see their numbers everywhere, and this confirms that numerology is real. However, according to critics, his frequent appearances were coincidence. In addition, critics point out that people tend to remember looking at their numbers and forget to look at other numbers.

Also read:

In other words, a person whose number is seven will remember seeing a multitude of seven while ignoring all six, eight and other numbers he comes across. People are also more likely to remember numeric attributes that apply to them while ignoring those that don’t. This phenomenon is known as confirmation bias.

But the biggest criticism of numerology is that it is based on an invented system of counting. This system was developed to allow people to count objects in groups of ten, most likely because most people have ten fingers to count. Even the English words for numbers, which come from Old English, reflect these groupings of ten. “Eleven” means “one left,” and “twelve” stands for “two lefts.”

However, this system, known as the base-10 system, is not the only – or even the oldest – counting system. Indigenous tribes in Australia, New Guinea, Africa and South America developed number systems that were counted in pairs. Rather than one, two, three, four, five, six, it develops more along the lines one, two, two plus one, two twos, two twos plus one, three twos. Some communities also use base-12 and base-60, which we still use to tell time.

In other words, numerology, like astrology, is based on systems people created that were developed to better organize the objects around them.

While people often find such systems helpful on a spiritual or emotional level. Indeed, there is no scientific evidence to prove that the system really works.
